OVERVIEW
BOOKMARKS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a community-based volunteer organization. It presents the annual BOOKMARKS book festival along with additional author events in the community throughout the year. Events are truly planned for the community, by the community.
The annual BOOKMARKS festival is a day of shared literary experience that engages families and individuals of all ages through a rich mixture of authors, books, readings, storytelling, demonstrations, workshops, booksignings, and other activities. Reading-related exhibitors and food vendors complement the mix of literary activities and performances.
The sixth edition of this regional festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010, 10:00am-5:00pm, on the streets and in the shops and galleries of the Downtown Arts District of Winston Salem. Admission is free.
In addition to the annual festival, BOOKMARKS presents one or more author event fundraisers each year, bringing such writers as Garrison Keillor, Elizabeth Gilbert, Geraldine Brooks, Sue Monk Kidd, and Jan Karon to the Triad for readings and signings.
ORIGINS
Work for this project began through the dedicated action of a volunteer planning committee organized in 2001. By 2004, the first BOOKMARKS festival was held to rave reviews and much success.
Each festival since, the event has drawn over 7,000 attendees from the Triad and beyond. Collectively, past festivals and author events have presented more than 250 authors, chefs, and illustrators to approximately 35,000 people!
MISSION
BOOKMARKS is committed to the following: providing a positive literacy experience for all ages and family demographics in the Piedmont Triad area and beyond; encompassing our community’s diverse cultures through partnerships and collaborations; incorporating entertainment; and yielding a favorable and positive impact for the community.
