(May 3, 2010) BOOKMARKS has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Millennium Fund, a donor advised fund of The Winston-Salem Foundation, to assist with the 2010 BOOKMARKS Festival of Books. BOOKMARKS fosters a community of passionate readers by offering an annual free-to-the-public event. The 2010 festival will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Downtown Arts District in Winston-Salem.
“This grant from the Millennium Fund will be a great help in our efforts to produce our sixth festival,” said Ginger Hendricks, executive director of BOOKMARKS. “The Festival presents top quality authors, who help draw visitors from around the region and the state to Winston-Salem. Presenting BOOKMARKS in the Downtown Arts District is a perfect intersection of the arts—literary, visual, and performance.”
The BOOKMARKS 2010 Festival of Books is an opportunity for writers and readers of all ages to be inspired by and learn from authors, illustrators, storytellers and chefs through readings, workshops, panel discussions, cooking demonstrations, and creative and interactive activities for children and teens. In partnership with community organizations, BOOKMARKS features live entertainment, a variety of food vendors, and reading-related exhibitors.
The Winston-Salem Foundation is a community foundation that supports charitable programs in the greater Forsyth County area. Founded in 1919 by Colonel Francis Fries with a $1,000 gift, it now administers over 1,200 funds, and had total custodial assets of $211 million at the end of 2008. In 2008, the Foundation granted more than $24 million to charitable causes, over $2 million of which was in competitive community grants.
BOOKMARKS is a nonprofit organization that provides positive literary experiences for all ages and demographics in the Piedmont Triad and beyond. They strive to champion literacy, promote cultural diversity through reading, and offer enrichment and education through literary experiences celebrating books and authors. BOOKMARKS is a member of the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.
